Learning outcomes and development goals K2 L Have a basic scientific-disciplinary knowledge and understanding in one of the areas based on the chosen specialization I1 L Problem analysis and solving I2 L Designing and/or developing I3 L Application-oriented research G1 L Acquiring and processing information G3 L Critical reflection Objectives Objective: To understand the mechanical behaviour of commonly used machine components and how to dimension them Objectives The course dimensioning of machines offers the students an overview of the building blocks of mechanical constructions. On the one hand, the course focuses on the description of the functionality of the components. This description is based on a basic scientific knowledge of the student. The student must be able to transfer this knowledge into applications specific to the discussed machine components covered. Furthermore, this course provides specific knowledge regarding the functionality and environment of the considered components. In this course, it is very important that the student is able to acquire and process the information offered in the course material. The acquired information should be correctly interpreted and translated to the problem typically encountered during a design process. The student should also be able to correctly derive the link between different machine parts in the overall design, and on that basis carry out the dimensioning correctly. It is of paramount importance that the student is able to interpret and analyse new similar problems based on the solutions formulated during the course. The design principles enable the student to make well-considered economically sound design decisions with regard to innovation, production, maintenance and quality. The student must take into account the intrinsic strength of the components. The additions/expansions to the strength of materials theory enable the students to make informed judgements about the loads a component can handle. Outcomes: Students will know the functioning and working principles of basic components in mechanical engineering (K1). The student can match the choice of basic mechanical components with the functionality of the machine (I1, G3). The student is able to correctly analyze the mechanical coupling between different basic mechanical components, and for simple applications translate this into the relevant load for the components (K1, I1). The student is able to translate the necessary principles of strength of materials into normative calculations on component level in mechanical engineering (K1, I1, I2). The student knows and has insight into the standardized procedures for the selection and calculation of basic components in mechanical engineering, and can look up, interpret and correctly apply the necessary information (K1, G1).
