Description

Objectives are two-fold: With regard to engineering mechanics: The student learns to apply the basic laws of mechanics correctly in concrete mechanical systems and motions. The focus is on the kinematics (including relative motion) and dynamics (including non-inertial dynamics) of mechanical systems and rigid bodies, for both three-dimensional and planar motions. Correct application means that the student knows under which conditions he/she is allowed to apply certain laws, how he/she needs to formulate these laws correctly and elaborate them for a specific situation. With regard to strength of materials: The student masters the basic concepts of strength of materials (section forces and moments, stresses and strains, defined in a three-dimensional space) and he/she can apply these in simple concrete situations. He / she knows the equilibrium equations as a function of stress, the relations between displacements and strains, and the relations between stresses and strains through the constitutive laws (Hooke's law). He / she knows the concept of strain energy density and related expressions as a function of stresses and strains.
