Description

The main aims of this course are: Give the student an insight in the main environmental problems, their connection, and in the techniques to avoid or solve these problems; Provide information on concrete environmental problems and methods, with focus on the civil engineering and mining sectors; At the same time, make the student familar with some analytical chemical methods of relevance for environmental research, civil engineering and mining. At the end of the course, the student must be able to: Describe pollutants, their origin, properties and impacts, in air, water and soil pollution. Give an overview of the situation in Flanders; Explain the environmental topics discussed during the course; Have elementary knowledge of the environmental legislation; Describe the methods discussed to control and manage environmental pollution; Propose solutions to environmental pollution related to civil engineering and mining.
