General and Biological Chemistry
Description
The main goal of the course is to provide insight in the relationship between structure and reactivity of (bio)molecules. Therefore, you start with understanding the structural organization of matter, from the smallest level (the structure of atoms) to the highest level (the three-dimensional structure of (bio)molecules). Next, you learn the parameters that determine the reactivity of chemical compounds, such as electronegativity, electron density, spontaneous reactions, electronic substituent effect, 3 dimensional structure etc. You also learn practical skills. You will need insight in the process as well as precision and accuracy. You also learn to interpret and work with experimental data. Attention for environmental health and safety are of very importance.
