Contribution to the program: This course introduces essential electrostatics and magnetostatics concepts for engineering, along with associated mathematical tools. Specific learning outcomes: Electromagnetism – qualitatively explain electromagnetic phenomena or properties based on course concepts; step-by-step simplify mathematical expressions of electrostatic or magnetostatic laws for symmetric configurations; calculate electrostatic or magnetostatic quantities for given applications, making and verifying simplifying assumptions as needed. Mathematical tools for electromagnetism – solve typical math exercises (e.g., tangent plane calculation, double/triple/line/surface integrals) using appropriate or prescribed methods; reformulate problems in mathematical notation/language (total differential, gradient, multiple integrals, line integrals, flux). Content description: Electromagnetism 1. Electrostatics: 1.1 Electric field; 1.2 Gauss's law; 1.3 Potential difference; 1.4 Capacitors and capacitance. 2. Magnetostatics: 2.1 Magnetic field; 2.2 Ampère's law; 2.3 Forces (Lorentz and Laplace); (2.4 Coils and inductance) [depending on available time]. Mathematical tools for electromagnetism: functions of several variables; vector calculus – planes and lines.
