Research in Teaching Practicum

Description

This required course is for students enrolled in the teacher training program aiming to obtain a teaching license for the religious subject (Bible studies). It centers on practical experience and analysis in educational settings (schools). The practicum involves teaching experience at designated schools, examining teacher images, methodologies, philosophies, and teaching materials in practice. Since the practicum schools are Christian, preaching is also an important task. The course includes mock lessons and preaching practice. Considering the traditions and characteristics of practicum schools, various possibilities are explored through mutual training. After the practicum, students continue learning through experience reports, analyses, and group discussions. Expectations and requirements regarding hours, content, and participation in related activities vary by school, but all share the responsibility of participating in important subject activities. Therefore, clear motivation to become a religious subject teacher, sincere attitude toward Christianity, and solid foundational knowledge and understanding of Christianity are required. This also means sincere engagement with churches is important. Practicum schools are limited and accept students at great sacrifice; students must avoid absences or tardiness except in emergencies during the practicum. Mutual training in classes is important preparation for the practicum, so attendance is essential. Practicum schools accept students on the premise that they have acquired basic knowledge of the Bible, Christian history, and theology, which also implies that students' Christian faith is evaluated. Students will develop the knowledge, techniques, and mindset necessary for teaching religious subjects (Bible studies). They will understand the purpose and obligations of the practicum, recognize their responsibilities, and increase their motivation to participate. Through teaching material research, students will enhance their specialized knowledge, acquire skills for lesson planning and teaching practice. Reflecting on knowledge and experience gained through the practicum, students will identify further knowledge and skills needed before obtaining the teaching license. Through presentations and discussions of mock lessons and practicum reports, students will improve problem-finding and communication skills. They will be able to proactively and collaboratively practice diverse religious education necessary for junior and senior high school students living in contemporary Japanese society.
