Description

This is your first module in architectural history and theory. This module introduces you to a broad timeline of global architectural history from ancient history to the present day. It also covers a range of specific themes, time periods and places in the history of architecture from around the world. It offers tools, methods, and terms to identify, describe and analyse architecture from various times and places. Knowing Through this module, you will gain a broad overview of global architectural history. You will learn how architecture from various time periods and places emerged and transformed within specific social, political, cultural, and environmental contexts. You will acquire an appreciation of how architectural history has been constructed, how it has been framed from distinct positions of power and dominance, and of the importance of learning from and about diverse cultures and traditions. You will also acquire tools and methods to identify, describe and analyse elements of architecture through visual and written modes of communication. Acting The module will require you to learn from lectures, as well as through reading, writing, and the analysis of architecture and architectural representations from different times and places. Workshops and/or seminars will provide opportunities to discuss the content of lectures and readings, and they will support you in learning to identify, describe and analyse architecture using appropriate tools, methods, and terms. You will also learn about the use of reliable sources and academic conventions of writing and referencing. Being This module will help you develop the language to describe and analyse architecture from various times and places as to describe your own design strategies and ideas. It will begin to reveal links between history and theory and practice that will be expanded upon in subsequent modules.
