Explorations in Architectural Design
Description
Architectural Design 1 is a year-long design module. The module helps first year students to creatively explore, create, and enjoy architectural design, construction, and sustainable dimensions of architecture, which are communicated through drawing and visual media. Knowing: The module will allow you to explore the various spatial, cultural, material, and sustainable conditions that influence architectural design and its qualities. Many of these aspects will be drawn from the other modules you are taking. Acting: The module delivers its learning outcomes through a series of design projects that gradually increase in complexity through the year. Those design projects invite you to speculate, negotiate and manage various architectural programmes and concepts in diverse sites and contexts, and explore the public versus the private realm as well as the natural versus the urban environment, while considering users’ interactions, material resources and building technologies. By adopting ‘learning by doing,’ you will create models, drawings and designs that respond to projects briefs. Being: Architectural Design 1 forms the foundation for you to start your journey of becoming architectural designers, building your curiosity through an explorative and creative mindset. This is your first opportunity to start exploring who you are or aspire to be as designers.
