3 lecture hours This course examines the fundamental underlying scientific concepts utilized in the creation and development of biomedical products. Topics to be covered include the structure and function of bio- molecules such as proteins, enzymes, carbohydrates, lipids, and DNA, as well as the structure and function of cellular components such as membranes, vesicles, organelles, and the cytoskeleton. In addition, students will examine the complexities of metabolism, DNA replication, transcription, translation, signal transduction mechanisms, apoptosis, the cell cycle, and cancer.
