Introduction to Statistics

Description

An introduction to the analysis of data from real life situations. Covers study design, descriptive and inferential statistics. Topics include probability, t-tests, regression, Chi-square tests, analysis of variance. Emphasis is in the foundation of statistical inference and practical application of statistical methods using statistical software. Learning Hours: 126 (12 Lecture, 18 Laboratory, 48 Online Activity, 48 Private Study) Requirements: Prerequisite ( GPHY 101 /3.0 or GPHY 102 /3.0 or BADR 100 /3.0 or BISC 100/3.0*) or permission of the Department. Course Learning Outcomes: - Identify the features of a data set to determine how best to summarize and display it. - Choose the appropriate statistical test and provide the rationale for selection. - Compute basic parametric statistical tests to test hypotheses. - Interpret the results of statistical tests and data software output to draw valid conclusions. - Communicate results of statistical analyses with clear figures and text. - Apply knowledge of statistics and research design (e.g., sampling) to critically evaluate research findings. Assessment/Exam Context: Course assessment and examinations vary by course; Queen's notes that eligible exchange students whose first language is not English may receive extra final-exam time. Exchange Registration Note: Arts and Science courses are open to exchange students subject to prerequisites and space. Most courses should be in Arts and Science; other faculties may be limited. Education, Medicine, and Nursing are not open to incoming exchange enrolment.
